What the review covers

Why indexed universal life?

Interest linked to an index

Cash value earns interest based on a market index, without your money being invested in the market.

A floor against losses

Credited interest usually has a 0% floor, so a down year in the index does not reduce credited interest. Policy charges still apply.

Cash value you can use

Borrow against the cash value for retirement income, college or emergencies. Loans reduce the death benefit until repaid.

Life insurance first

Your beneficiaries receive the death benefit, whatever the market did that year.

Questions

Common questions

Is indexed universal life an investment?

No. It is permanent life insurance with a cash value account. Interest is credited based on the movement of a stock market index, but your money is not invested in the market.

Can I lose money?

Credited interest has a floor, usually 0%, so a down year in the index does not reduce the credited interest. Policy costs and fees still apply and can reduce cash value, and gains are usually capped. Ask the agent to walk through the illustration.

Can I use the cash value while I am alive?

Yes. You can usually take loans or withdrawals against the cash value. Loans reduce the death benefit until repaid, and withdrawals can have tax consequences.

Who is this a fit for?

People who want a death benefit for their family plus a place to build cash value over many years. A licensed agent reviews whether it fits your situation before anything is applied for.
